We are rapidly approaching the time of the nomination/election process for the Annunciation Parish Council. This process is a time of informational sharing, prayer and discernment.
WHAT IS A PARISH COUNCIL?
A parish council is a consultative body, which makes recommendations to the pastor regarding the needs of the parishioners.
WHAT IS THE MISSION AND PURPOSE OF THE PARISH COUNCIL?
The mission of the parish council is to promote the reality of Jesus by providing a place where everyone belongs, respects and cares for each person, thereby making Jesus real and believable to each and every person. The parish council exercise a shared responsibility for the pastoral life of the parish under the authority and leadership of the pastor. In this context, the purpose of the parish council is to prayerfully engage the people and the pastor in common reflection about the parish’s mission and ministry.
WHO ARE THE MEMBERS OF THE PARISH COUNCIL?
The parish council is composed of fourteen to sixteen members. Twelve members are elected by the parish and the pastor and the finance committee chairperson are ex-officio members of the parish council. Another two members can be appointed by the pastor (at his discretion) to serve any special interest in the parish.
HOW LONG IS COUNCIL MEMBER’S TERM?
In order to maintain continuity, one-third of the council will be open for election each year. This year, four members are to be elected for a three-year term. Remaining candidates will be alternates in the event that a council member is unable to fulfill their terms.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR NOMINATION?
Baptized and confirmed members of the Catholic faith, sixteen (16) years of age or older, who are currently registered in the parish, and who are not employed by the parish or already serving on another parish advisory council or board.
WHAT IS THE NOMINATION PROCESS?
Nomination forms are distributed at all the Masses. You may nominate anyone if eligible, and it is entirely proper to nominate yourself. The ushers or current parish members will collect the nomination forms during Masses or you may take the nomination form to the pastoral office.
As a nominee, you will be asked to attend an evening of discernment to prayerfully decide if serving on the parish council is God’s will for you at this time.
